The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka Lakshman Kadirgamar met with the Russian Association of Tea and Coffee Producers, “Rusteacoffee” headed by its general director Ramaz Chanturia in Moscow on the 22nd of June. Sri Lankan Tea Board Chairman Niraj de Mel, officials of Ceylon tea business and Russian tea companies, members of the Association “Rusteacoffee” attended the meeting. The two sides discussed greater cooperation between the tea traders of the two countries and agreed to set up a bilateral coordination committee to promote cooperation between the Association of “Rusteacoffee” and the Tea Board. Unilever Tea Company Promotes its Production

Unilever CIS Company held presentation on the 15th of June devoted to the commissioning of a new tea-bagging facility in its factory in St. Petersburg. Among the people attended the ceremony were managers of the company, city administration officials, businessmen and other officials.
The existing production line has now new IMA-2000 advanced tea bag machines, which make it possible to increase the production significantly. As a result annual production has increased up to 15 000 tons of tea, including 4 000 tons of tea bags. The company has already invested 20 million US dollars.
When the company commissioned its factory two years ago share of the country’s tea bag market was estimated between 12% and 14% of the overall volume. At the time experts at the Roschaikofe Company noted a stable trend in growth of tea bags consumption and forecast that this share would grow consistently. At present this segment occupies 18% of the market. The fact that companies increase the production capacity of tea bagging confirms that there is a stable growth in the tea bags consumption.

Barista Championship Ends

Tim Wendelboe of Norway with 662 points won the fifth world Barista championship that ended in Trieste, Italy on the 20th of June. This time Russia failed to occupy a place in the first six. But the competition as forecast by experts, was more competitive than the previous championships. A record number of people took part in the competition. 37 people, an increase by 11 compared to last year participated in the qualifying round. The number of marks received shows that professionalism of Barists grows each year. Last year Paul Basset of Australia won 607 points and came first. Irina Puzachkova of Russia won 477 points and was in the last 6th place. Among those who claimed for the first places were experienced professionals who took part in previous world championships. For one, this year’s champion Tim Wendelboe won the second place three years ago.

Russia introduces a new standard, GOST for roasted natural coffee. The general director of the Association of Tea and Coffee Producers, “Roschaikofe" Ramaz Chanturia informed this. According to new GOST, the coffee producers must mention on the packet the kind of coffee and level of roasting. The GOST introduces a new category of coffee - “premium”. Under technical regulating law that came into force on the 1st of July last year, production of foods, including coffee is established by the technical order of business. The producers meet the demand of GOST voluntarily.

A conference on the Russian-Brazilian economic relations took place in Moscow

A conference on June 2nd, 2004, organized by the Trade Federation of the Pernambuko State (Northeast region of Brazil) and Brazilian embassy, was held in Moscow to discuss the issues of the Russian-Brazilian economic relations and its prospects.
The conference discussed the prospects of a two-side business cooperation, as well as direct business contacts between Russian and Brazilian entrepreneurs. Among the members of the Brazilian delegation that visited Moscow specially for the conference, were the representatives of the Brazilian business circles - Professor Josue Mussalem, general coordinator of the Oscar Amonim Institute for Business Study and Development (“The Brazilian economy on the threshold of the XXI century”), Doctor Dilton Conti, president of the Sao Francisco Energy Company (CHESF) (“Energy Potential of Brazil”), Mr. Francisco Assis Gadelia, vice-president of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) (“The Brazilian industry in the XXI century. Its role in the process of modernization”), Mr. Andre Odenbreit Cavalio, head of the economic department of the Brazilian Embassy in Moscow (“Trade-economic relations between Brazil and Russia"), Mr. Josias da Silva Albuquerque, president of the Business Federation of the State of Pernambuco (“Human services in Brazil - modern stage of development”), Professor Boris Martinov, executive director of the Institute of Latin America of the Science Academy of Russia (“Modern Russia - economy and policy”).
In his speech, Mr. Carlos Augusta R. Santas Neves pointed out that the current stable economic development in both Russia and Brazil allows not only to expand the intergovernmental and trade relations but also create the new momentum and stability for business relations between the countries. .
